Occupational Physiotherapy

Occupational Physiotherapy has been shown to have demonstrable effects in reducing both the incidence and overall number of days lost to ill health and accidents in the workplace.

We are well placed to advise on improving your working environment and provide ergonomic guidelines to help you find the best environment to suit your body. We will identify the factors which have caused the symptoms which are nearly always related to a repetitive task related to your working posture e.g. keyboard typing.

In July 2000 the Government in conjunction with the Health and Safety Commission launched a strategy “Securing Health Together”which identified musculoskeletal disorders as an area to be addressed as a priority.

Results of the Health & Safety Commission's 'Securing Health Together' Report - July 2000

WRULD (Work Related Upper Limb Disorder)

WRULD is used to describe people who suffer from diffuse pain anywhere in the arm and/or neck. It can be caused by repetitive or forceful activities or by poor posture.

Your ergonomic environment is an important consideration in relation to WRULD or RSI. We are well placed to advise you on improving your working environment and provide ergonomic guidelines to help you find the best environment to suit your body.

How to improve your workpsace environment

  1. One of the first things to check is if your workstation is symmetrical e.g. is the monitor or place that your type and write straight in front of you?
  2. Are the files or equipment you access most frequently close to you and balanced on both the left and right sides?
  3. If you are sitting for long periods, you will need a supportive and adjustable chair and your feet should be flat on the floor - or on a foot stall if they don’t reach the floor.
  4. Take regular breaks.

Physiotherapy treatment may include:

  • spinal mobilisation,
  • soft tissue techniques for muscles,
  • neural tissue mobilisation,
  • postural muscle strengthening

Testimonials

I never thought I would, but I really enjoyed physiotherapy at Impact. I feel very enlightened, knowing much more about my condition, and how to improve it. I am much more mobile. The exercises I was given were sensible and achievable, if somewhat taxing, and really made a difference to my ability to cope with everyday life. This was our aim.
